Queenslanders love the water and the sun which has resulted that 28% of properties here have swimming pools. It’s 18% for the whole of Australia.
Unfortunately in my role as a Pool Safety Inspector and Certifier I have been to properties where there have been incidents and child drownings. Last year 28 children under the age of five drowned in Queensland. This is far too high.
An important pool safety education program is the ‘Kids Alive – Do The Five’ program which has possibly reduced the number for drownings like the Pool fencing regulations. This five free lesson program is run at the Logan North Aquatic Centre in Underwood and at the Laurie Lawrence Swim School.
Exciting news for 2020 is that the Council is expanding the Pool Safety Education program to ensure the Logan Community is provided with the essential pool safety information to assist in making their fencing and families safe. As a Pool Safety Inspector I fully advocate and support this action of pool safety which is educating and protecting our community.
